The Humanize Long Term Care campaign grew out of what was formerly known as the Institutional Rescue & Recovery Coalition (IRRC), established in April 2020 in response to the disproportionate effect of COVID-19 on residents of long-term care facilities. Originally a fight to save lives in the COVID emergency and for residents’ right to organize, in 2022 leaders shifted to the broader mission of transforming the long term care system so that all those needing care could get person-centered, high-quality care, including options for the most community-integrated settings, free persons with disabilities and elders from needless institutionalization and ‘rebalancing’ care systems and improving wages and working conditions for long term care workers.
